The House Is Black
(Khaneh siah ast)
Forough Farrokhzad (Iran 1963)

«Forugh Farrochzads The House Is Black, ein dokumentarisches Porträt über eine Kolonie von Leprakranken, war einer der ersten grossen iranischen Filme; es ist das einzige Mal, dass der erste bedeutende Regisseur einer Nation eine Frau war. (...) The House Is Black hatte grossen Einfluss auf das schnörkellose, poetische iranische Kino der 90er-Jahre, insbesondere auf die Regisseurin Samira Machmalbaf.» (Mark Cousins: The Story of Film, Pavilion 2020)

“Fourough Farrokhzad’s The House Is Black, a documentary portrait of a leper colony, was one of the first great Iranian films and is the only instance where a nation's first significant filmmaker was a woman. (...) The House Is Black was a key influence on the spare Iranian poetic cinema of the 1990s and, in particular, on the director Samira Makhmalbaf.” (Mark Cousins: The Story of Film, Pavilion 2020)

The film was restored by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and Ecran Noir productions, in collaboration with Ebrahim Golestan. Additional support was generously provided by Genoma Films and Mahrokh Eshaghian. Restoration work was carried out at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in 2019.
