Ägypten vor 3000 Jahren: Ram, der Lieblingssohn eines Hirtenkönigs, lebt mit seiner Sippe in einem Dürregebiet. Er träumt davon, ins Ägypten der Pharaonen auszuwandern, um die Grundregeln der Landwirtschaft zu erlernen. Seine Brüder wollen ihn aus Hass und Neid umbringen: Sie schlagen ihn zusammen und werfen ihn in ein Boot, das nach Ägypten fährt. Dort wird er als Sklave verkauft.
«Unschwer ist die Parallele zur Josefslegende erkennbar. Sie sorgte einerseits für riesige Begeisterung (Josef gehört bei den Muslimen zu den ganz besonders beliebten Propheten) und andererseits für Ablehnung. Fundamentalisten und die Linke warfen Chahine vor, mit seinem Film die ‹Normalisierung› mit Israel zu propagieren: Ram ist für sie nämlich ein besserwisserischer Ausländer, und zwar ein Jude. Mit der Begründung, dass nach dem ägyptischen Gesetz Propheten nicht auf der Leinwand gezeigt werden dürfen, zogen die Fundamentalisten vor Gericht und erreichten im Juni 1996 ein definitives Aufführverbot.» (Kristina Bergmann, Filmpodium, Aug. 1996)

Egypt, 3000 years ago: Ram, the favourite son of a shepherd king, is living in a drought area with his clan. He dreams of emigrating to the Egypt of the Pharaohs to learn the basic rules of agriculture. His brothers want to kill him out of hatred and envy: They beat him up and throw him into a boat heading to Egypt. Upon his arrival, he is sold as a slave.
«The similarity to the story of Joseph is obvious. On the one hand, this was met with huge enthusiasm (Joseph is one of the most popular prophets among Muslims) and on the other hand, it was met with rejection. Fundamentalists and leftists accused Chahine of propaganda for the ‹normalization› of relationships with Israel in his film: To them, Ram was a know-it-all foreigner, a Jew. Based on the premise that Egyptian law forbids the onscreen representation of prophets, the fundamentalists went to court; in June 1996, they achieved that the film was banned from performances in Egyptian cinemas forever.» (Kristina Bergmann, Filmpodium, August 1996)
