«Die Verfilmung des 1954 erschienenen berühmten epischen Romans von Abdul Rahman Al-Sharqawi spielt in den frühen 30er-Jahren, als das ägyptische Land noch fest in feudale Strukturen eingebunden war. Es ist ein leidenschaftliches Porträt der Bauern eines Dorfes, deren Existenz durch einen Erlass, der eine zusätzliche Einschränkung der Bewässerungszeit ihrer Erde vorschreibt, bedroht wird. Einzig der Bauer Mohamed Abu Swelam bleibt unbeugsam. Eine Szene, in der er, von Schweiss und Blut tropfend, das Land mit seinen nackten Händen bearbeitet, zählt zu den bemerkenswertesten Szenen der ägyptischen Filmgeschichte. «The adaptation of Abdul Rahman Al-Sharqawi's famous epic novel, published in 1954, is set in the early 1930s, when the Egyptian backlands were still subject to feudal structures. It is a passionate portrayal of the farmers of a village whose existence is threatened by a decree imposing further restrictions on the irrigation of their land. Only one farmer, Mohamed Abu Swelam, refuses to comply. The sequence in which he works the land with his bare hands, dripping with sweat and blood, is one of the most remarkable scenes in Egyptian film history.
