Ein dokumentarisches Porträt von Toshiro Mifune (1920–1997), das vor allem auf seine Kollaboration mit Akira Kurosawa und deren enormen Einfluss auf das Weltkino eingeht. Gleichzeitig bietet der Film auch eine Einführung in das Genre des japanischen Schwertkampf-Films, des Chambara, illustriert mit vielen Filmausschnitten von zum Teil verlorenen Werken des frühen japanischen Kinos. Zu Wort kommen zahlreiche Weggefährten, darunter Kyoko Kagawa, Yoko Tsukasa, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Takeshi Kato, Haruo Nakajima, der Kampfchoreograf Kanzo Uni (der über 100-mal von Mifune erschlagen wurde), aber auch der Schauspieler Koji Yakusho, die Regisseure Steven Spielberg und Martin Scorsese und die Söhne Shiro Mifune und Hisao Kurosawa. A documentary portrait of Toshiro Mifune (1920-1997), which deals mainly with his collaboration with Akira Kurosawa and its enormous influence on world cinema. At the same time, the film also offers an introduction to the genre of Japanese swordfighting films, «chambara», illustrated with many film excerpts from works from early Japanese cinema, some of which were lost.
