Der Journalist Charles Tatum hat seinen Job bei einer grossen Zeitung verloren und ist in der Provinz gestrandet. Ungeduldig wartet er auf eine neue Chance und wittert sie, als ein Amateurarchäologe in einer Höhle verschüttet wird. Zwar könnte man ihn in wenigen Stunden befreien; aber mithilfe des korrupten Sheriffs verzögert Tatum die Aktionen und kompliziert sie, um sechs Tage lang «exklusiv» über das Unglück berichten und es ausschlachten zu können.
Ace in the Hole, auch bekannt als The Big Carnival, ist ein ebenso zynischer wie brillanter Angriff des ehemaligen Reporters Wilder auf die Sensationsmache der Presse und die Sensationsgier ihrer Leser. Damals warf man dem Filmemacher Geschmacklosigkeit vor; heutzutage mutet seine überspitzte Darstellung der Medien bloss realistisch an. (mb)

Journalist Charles Tatum has lost his job at a big newspaper and ended up in the boondocks. Impatiently waiting for a break, he smells an opportunity when an amateur archaeologist is buried in a cave. Although the man could be saved within a matter of hours, Tatum, aided and abetted by the corrupt sheriff, delays and complicates the rescue efforts in order to be able to report «exclusively» on the accident and exploit it for six days.
Ace in the Hole, also known as The Big Carnival, is a cynical and brilliant attack by former reporter Wilder on the sensationalism of the press and the sensation seeking of its readers. At the time of the film's release, the filmmaker was accused of bad taste; nowadays, his pointed portrayal of the media merely feels realistic. (mb)
