Als TV-Kameramann Harry bei einem Footballspiel vom stämmigen Spieler «Boom Boom» Jackson überrannt wird, wittert sein Schwager, der Winkeladvokat Willie, das grosse Geld: Er überredet Harry, eine schwere Verletzung vorzutäuschen, um die Versicherung abzuzocken. Doch diese lässt den Scheininvaliden beschatten.
Der erste Film mit dem nunmehr klassischen Paar Lemmon/Matthau variiert nicht nur das Wilder’sche Thema Geldgier versus Liebe und Menschlichkeit, sondern bringt durch die Figur des schwarzen Footballstars «Boom Boom» auch eine Prise Rassismuskritik ins Spiel. (mb)
«Lemmons besonderes Geschick in dieser Rolle besteht darin, sie vor Langeweile oder Gewöhnlichkeit zu bewahren. Er überzeichnet sie nicht, um Interesse oder Mitgefühl zu heischen. When TV cameraman Harry is run down during a football game by massive player «Boom Boom» Jackson, his brother-in-law Willie, an ambulance-chasing shyster, smells big money: He persuades Harry to fake a serious injury to rip off the insurance. But the insurance company hires an investigator to keep tabs on the bogus invalid.
The first film with the now classic couple Lemmon/Matthau not only provides a new variation on Wilder's theme of greed versus love and humanity, but also takes on racism by siding with the character of the sympathetic black football star «Boom Boom». (mb)
«Lemmon's particular ability in this role is that he saves it from dullness or ordinariness. He does not overplay to achieve interest or sympathy. He makes the character important and vulnerable, and without overstating it, universal. Matthau, with the role of a lifetime at his hands, seizes it and makes it wonderful. As the incompetent shyster, Matthau snarls, cajoles, is breezy and sniveling by turns.
