«The Cool World war Frederick Wisemans erste Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kino (er produzierte den Film) und Shirley Clarkes zweiter Film als Regisseurin/Autorin (nach The Connection). Im Kern ist das ein nicht eben aufregendes Melodram über einen schwarzen Jungen in Harlem, der auf die harte Tour lernt, dass Verbrechen keine Antwort auf soziale Probleme ist. An der Oberfläche aber ist es ein sehr viel interessanterer Blick auf den Alltag im Ghetto, strukturiert als ein Strom von ‹unbedeutenden› Ereignissen, verschiedentlich wütenden, verängstigten und abgekämpften Figuren und allzu glaubhaften Formen von Druck. Oft grob gefilmt, aber mit einem wunderbar vielschichtigen Soundtrack, in den ausgezeichneter Jazz eingebaut ist.» (Tony Rayns, Time Out Film Guide)

«The Cool World was Frederick Wiseman's first involvement with cinema (he produced it) and Shirley Clarke's second feature as director/writer (after The Connection). At heart, it's a not-very-interesting melodrama about a black kid in Harlem learning the hard way that crime is no answer to social problems. But on the surface it's a very much more interesting view of day-to-day life in the ghetto, patterned as a flow of 'insignificant' incidents, variously angry, frightened and defeated characters, and all too credible pressures. «Indeed, scored as much of it is to the music of Dizzy Gillespie, with his group also featuring Charlie Mingus and Art Taylor, jazz style improvisation becomes the central aspect of the film's aesthetic.
