Aubrey, ein kleiner Angestellter bei der Eisenbahn, trumpft als grosser Manager auf und beeindruckt die naive Amy Fisher, die ihn heiraten will. Amys Familie gehört dem unteren Mittelstand an und hat in jeder Hinsicht wenig übrig für das gefrässige Grossmaul Aubrey. Amys Bruder Joe tüftelt an einem neuartigen Rostschutzverfahren herum und seine kostspieligen Experimente gehen ans Ersparte seines Vaters. Joes Freundin Clara sieht mit Missfallen, wie Aubrey die Fishers ausnutzt und Amy ins Unglück zu stürzen droht.
«The Show Off» war ein grosser Broadway-Erfolg, dessen Stummfilm-Adaption auf die Stärke der Vorlage, die Dialoge, weitgehend verzichten musste. Atmosphärisch liegt der Film zwischen einem recht realistischen Drama um eine Familie in wirtschaftlichen Nöten und einer schwankhaften Komödie um eine Nervensäge. Ford Sterling, ein Klamaukkomiker aus dem Stall von Mack Sennett, verkörpert den unausstehlichen Grosskotz Aubrey, und Louise Brooks als Clara ist die Einzige, die ihn in die Schranken weisen kann – oft allein mit einem Blick. Wie Billy Wilders Stummfilmstar Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard sagt: «We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces.» Louise Brooks illustriert das aufs Schönste, auch in dieser ungewohnt sympathischen Rolle. (mb)

Aubrey, a small clerk with the railway company, shows off as a big executive to impress naive Amy Fisher, who wants to marry him. Amy's lower-middle-class family does not have time (or food) for the greedy loudmouth. Amy's brother Joe is tinkering with a new kind of rust-protection process and his experiments are digging into his father's savings. Joe's girlfriend Clara looks on with disapproval as Aubrey takes advantage of the Fishers, risking Amy's misfortune. "The Show Off" was a great Broadway success, whose silent-movie adaptation largely had to make do without the forte of the original, the dialogue. Atmospherically, the film oscillates between a fairly realistic drama about a family in economic hardship and a farce about a pesky blowhard. Ford Sterling, a slapstick comedian from Mack Sennett's company, plays the obnoxious show-off Aubrey, and Louise Brooks as Clara is the only character who can put him in his place – often with a mere look. As Billy Wilder's silent-movie star Norma Desmond says in Sunset Boulevard: "We didn't need dialogue. We had faces." Louise Brooks beautifully proves her point, even in this unusually likeable role.
