Elmer Prettywillie, der Inhaber eines Drugstores, verstrickt sich in allerlei Ungemach. Eine Frau auf der Suche nach einer Briefmarke bringt ihn um den Schlaf und löst Feueralarm aus, aber der Brand bricht erst aus, als die Feuerwehr wieder abgezogen ist. Ein windiger Immobilienmakler, der sich in Marilyn, die «Tresenfee» verguckt, gewinnt Elmer für ein dubioses Geschäft, das ihn fast ins Verderben führt.
Louise Brooks kannte W. C. Fields, der hier seine erste Hauptrolle spielt, von den Ziegfeld Follies, zu denen der Komiker Sketches beisteuerte, und mochte ihn. Eigentlich sollte das It-Girl Clara Bow die weibliche Hauptrolle spielen, aber sie hatte Terminkonflikte, sodass die 19-jährige Brooks als Marilyn Eindruck machen konnte. Kurz nach den Dreharbeiten heiratete sie den Regisseur, Edward Sutherland. Itʼs the Old Army Game – der Titel bezieht sich auf das bei Schwindlern beliebte Hütchenspiel – ist eher eine chaotische Aneinanderreihung von typisch menschenfeindlichen Fieldsʼschen Gags als ein Spielfilm. Elmer Prettywillie, the owner of a drugstore, gets into all kinds of trouble. A woman looking for a stamp makes him lose sleep and sets off a fire alarm, but the fire only breaks out once the fire brigade has left. A dodgy real estate agent who falls for Elmer's "counter attraction" Marilyn (Louise Brooks) wins him over for a shady deal that takes him to Florida and almost to ruin. Louise Brooks knew W. C. Fields, seen here in his first leading role, from the Ziegfeld Follies, to which the comedian contributed sketches, and she liked him. Originally, It girl Clara Bow was supposed to play the female lead, but she had scheduling conflicts so that 19-year-old Brooks was given this opportunity to make an impression. Shortly after the shoot, she married the director, Edward Sutherland. Itʼs the Old Army Game – the title refers to the shell game popular with con men – is more a chaotic compilation of typically misanthropic Fieldsian gags than a feature film. (mb)
Preceded by the only surviving fragment of Now We're in the Air, a rollicking silent comedy in which the American adventurers Wally and Ray are accidentally embroiled in the First World War and fall in love with twins played by Louise Brooks.
